Mission teams from the Southern Pines United Methodist Church, the Missouri Annual Conference, and the North Raleigh United Methodist Church, along with help from the North Carolina Annual Conference, bought the land and built Iglesia Metodista del Peru-Jose Olaya from 2003-2008, in a young village, outside Lima, Peru. The building was consecrated by Bishop Jorge Bravo on March 2, 2008.
A mission team from the Southern Pines United Methodist Church travelled to Peru in Feb. 2010. Members worked at the Miramar United Methodist Church in Lima converting a classroom into a dormitory for seminary students who lived outside the city.
Among the projects worked on were fixing a leak in the water line from the street, moving the water tank to a secure location, tiling the floors of the dining room and kitchen, tiling the walls of the kitchen, working on the plumbing in the men’s bathroom, and painting the bedroom. In addition, the upstairs classrooms at Jose Olaya were also painted. The week concluded with the team leading a Sunday afternoon Bible activity with children from Jose Olaya.
